Stuarts of Bute are descended from the natural son of King Robert II. This maroon version is the same sett as Scottish Tartans World Register reference #1485 which is the family tartan of the Marquis of Bute, though others more or less closely related have likewise claimed an interest. Whether or not the pattern was in use before the publication of the Vestiarium Scoticum is not known. Although much used this popular version does not have the approval of the Marquis. - undated — Stuart/Stewart of Bute hunting (weddslist, record)
