  • 01/12/1994 — Bell of Ardbel (Personal) (register-of-tartans, record)
    The name of this tartan was changed to John Bell by the Scottish Tartans Society in 1999, against the wishes of the owner. The reason given being that it would be confused with Bell of the Borders (STR #243) or Border Bell (STR #244). The Scottish Tartans Authority re-instated the original name in May 2004. Other Bells can wear this tartan if they wish and it can be purchased from Mr John Bell (May 2004).

    Other Bells can wear this tartan but they will need to source it for themselves. The name of the tartan was changed to John Bell by the Scottish Tartans Society in 1999 against the wishes of the owner. The reason given being that it would be confused with Bell of the Borders (#1489) or Border Bell (#370). The Scottish Tartans Authority re-instated the original name in May 2004.
