The Haig is the estate check of the Haig family of Bemersyde in the Scottish Borders, and beneath its colour it is the old Border check. It began as a regimental sett: designed in 1908 by Sir Richard Waldie-Griffiths, Colonel of the 4th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, who took the black-and-white Shepherd's Check — the Border shepherds' plaid that descends from the ancient Falkirk sett — and lifted it with a blue overcheck for the battalion's pipers. After the Great War Field Marshal Earl Haig returned to the Borders and the design came to be known as the Haig and was adopted by his family; tradition has it the Haigs and the neighbouring Buccleuchs were long 'at daggers drawn', which only fixed the new name the faster.
