Provenance

James Logan recorded the Abercrombie sett in 1831, on page 402 of the Table of Clan Tartans in The Scottish Gaël — the earliest systematic published collection of clan setts. Logan gives the stripe widths in eighths of an inch, measured across the cloth and reflected about each end (a half-sett):

3½ green · ½ white · 3½ green · 3½ black · 1 blue · 1 black · 1 blue · 1 black · 3½ blue

In threads (at 8 to the eighth-inch) that is G/28 W4 G28 K28 B8 K8 B8 K8 B/28. Logan named his colours rather than dyeing to a standard, so the palette here is the Dictionary's modern reading of his names.

1. Melville Family Tartan Tartan Number: 1050. Earliest known date: 1847 There is a sample in the Moy Hall collection.(1848). This sett, also known as Oliphant and Melville, appears in one of Wilson's notebooks in 1847. It is mentioned in a letter dated June 1824 but without any means of identification. It is also to be found in the Scott Adie (London) collection and in the MacPherson Museum in Newtonmore. Wilson records the second pivot (between the white lines) as blue. 5. Scottish Airports Corporate Tartan Tartan Number: 2510. Earliest known date: November 1988 An archetypal Kinloch Anderson blue design. Scottish Tartan Society notes say that Percy Pilcher (an early aviation pioneer 1866 -1899) had connections to the Gunn tartan (his mother was a Robinson). The design is based on that sett using the colours of the British Airports Authority with the purple line added to represent the Scottish thistle.
