Sempill Clan/Family Tartan Tartan Number: 2420. Earliest known date: 1996 The historic connection between the Forbes and the Sempills is the reason for the similarity of the tartans. Sir Thomas Innes of Learney GCVO Lord Lyon 1945 - 1969 suggested that red should be use in the tartan because that colour was in the Sempill chevron.
